What affects the cost of a concrete project
The calculator above gives you a real number from your own inputs — here's what typically drives those numbers up or down, so you know what to look for on your specific job.
Project type and use
Structural slabs, driveways, patios and sidewalks all carry different thickness and reinforcement needs, which is the main driver of concrete volume and cost.
Thickness and reinforcement
Both are set by the project's structural requirements (load, soil, code) — never guessed by this tool. More of either means more material and labor cost.
Finish
A basic broom or trowel finish is the cheapest baseline. Stamped, colored, exposed-aggregate or polished finishes add material and labor.
Site access
Pours that need a pump truck, or that involve difficult access for delivery trucks, cost more than a straightforward direct-chute pour.
Regional material and labor rates
Ready-mix pricing per yard and crew labor rates vary widely by region — always price with your own current supplier and labor numbers.
How this calculator works
- 1Area — length × width gives the footprint in square feet.
- 2Volume — area × thickness (converted to feet) gives cubic feet, divided by 27 to get cubic yards.
- 3Order quantity — your allowance percentage is added on top so you don't come up short on pour day, then rounded to whatever increment you choose.
- 4Cost and price — ready-mix, labor, forms, reinforcement and equipment costs are totaled, overhead is added for true cost, and the required price is solved for your target margin.
Frequently asked questions
What project types can I use this for?
Any rectangular concrete pour — slabs, driveways, patios, sidewalks, pads or custom flatwork. For multi-section projects (like an L-shaped driveway), Concrete Cost Pro lets you add multiple sections to one project.
How much does ready-mix concrete cost per yard?
Ready-mix pricing varies by region, mix strength and delivery distance — commonly somewhere in the $130–$200 per cubic yard range in the US, though local suppliers may quote higher or lower. Enter your own supplier's price per yard in the calculator above; this tool never assumes a national average for your estimate.
Is this a concrete estimate calculator or just a quantity calculator?
Both — enter dimensions to get concrete quantity, then add your material, labor and equipment costs to turn that quantity into a full project cost estimate and, with Contractor Pricing, a target-margin selling price.
Is this the same as concrete estimating software?
This free calculator handles one-off quantity and cost math. Concrete Cost Pro (sometimes searched as concrete estimator software) adds saved rates, job costing, rate-health tracking, branded estimates and estimate-vs-actual reporting for running an ongoing concrete business.
